Cashing In On Part-Time Work Opportunities

Parents and people with a disability wanting part-time work are perfectly positioned to capitalise on local staff shortages according to Karen Edden from Sarina Russo Job Access.

Ms Edden said with labour shortages biting business hard, parents and people with a disability are an untapped source of high quality labour.

"Employers need to recognise our suburbs are full of many talented parents and people with a disability who can make a positive contribution to the part-time workforce.

"Sarina Russo Job Access helps employers use strategies such as job sharing and part-time work to give parents and people with a disability a chance to prove their abilities.

"It can be a perfect fit because both groups want part-time hours and smart employers are becoming flexible employers by offering family friendly shifts or job share arrangements.

"Flexibility is vital because parents are only attracted and motivated to re-enter the workforce if they believe the decision will benefit their children and their family's future.

Rachel Kayrooz has a young daughter and says it was very daunting for her to take that step from full-time parenthood back into the workforce.

"Sarina Russo Job Access supported me and gave me advice on Childcare Benefit and the confidence to return to work.

"As a single parent, returning to employment was very important to me for financial reasons and to continue building on my skills from previous years in the workforce.

"I also wanted to bring up my daughter to learn responsibility and have a good work ethic.

"My daughter has taken on many new interests and hobbies and working allows me to financially support those interests, such as ballet and swimming," Ms Kayrooz said.

Ms Edden said Sarina Russo Job Access mentors parents and people with a disability become job ready and we link them with flexible employers.

"We assist with resumes, coach people on interview techniques and provide career counseling to assist them in making the right choices," Ms Edden said.
